Are Mild Chemical Peels Safe for the Skin?

Chemical peels are harsher treatments that are used for stripping away the old and blemished layer of the skin. Treatments with mild chemical peels are stronger and harsher than other skin repair treatments as they make immense use of mild acids like Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), Alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA), Glycolic acid or phenolic acid. These acids have the property of burning anything that comes in contact with them. Thus, when these acids are used in forms of peeling agents, they penetrate into the deeper layers by burning the outer layers of the skin. However, all the mild chemical peels use mild concentration of acids which do not cause any significant injury to the skin. There may be just a few minor side effects that eliminate on their own after certain time. The side effect commonly shared among the majority of patients is the temporary discoloration of skin. A brownish tinge of skin tone may appear and last for a few days. The risk of skin discoloration is most evidently seen among those women who have been on a regular dosage of birth control pills or pregnant. Redness and rashes may also occur after undergoing a chemical peel treatment, but may last for 2-3 days only.
