Difference between mole and freckle

Both freckles and moles are caused due to increased skin pigmentation in the skin. Each has some distinguishing characteristics that help experts to distinguish between the two. Freckles are characterized by small, flat, pigmented spots on the skin. They are confined to the upper areas of the skin and usually affect regions like face, back, arms and hands. They usually develop as a result of exposure to sunlight. Moles are skin pigmentations that appear raised or flat and occur anywhere on the body. Moles may be present at birth or they may develop later in life. Freckles are never present at birth and usually develop later in life. Moles are actually clusters of pigmented cells called melanocytes. They may be raised or flat in appearance. They may be red, brown or black in color. Moles may darken upon exposure to sunlight. They never disappear on their own, though they can be removed surgically or by using laser or chemical treatments. Freckles usually fade on their own in winter and reappear during summer. Freckles are very common in light skinned people although it is not commonly associated with skin cancer. Moles on the other hand have been linked to skin cancer. Abnormal, asymmetrical moles may indicate skin cancer and should be examined by a doctor.
