What Side Effects Can There Be with Chemical Peels?

Side effects of chemical peels are uncommon, however, some women do complain about minor changes observed in their skin after the completion of the treatment. A burning sensation and feeling of stinging on the treated skin are the most common post treatment side effects. The sensations particularly occur when the skin comes in contact with curing agents like AHA, phenol solution or TCA. However, these minor side effects can be prevented by the timely usage of a cooling pack or liquid on to the treated skin. Further, there is redness observed on the skin which lasts for a temporary period. The patient undergone an AHA skin treatment may not face any redness at all, whereas, the patient opted for a TCA chemical peel may experience slight redness for two-three weeks.  Further, in some cases, crusts and scabs may develop as the skin’s reaction towards the acidic solution applied on the sensitive skin. Phenol peels are particularly known for causing crusting as in this treatment the old layer exfoliates and gives way to the underneath skin to emerge. Flaking and peeling are yet other common side effects of using chemical peels for skin rejuvenation. These side effects can be easily treated with the use of certain skin lotions or ointments.
