Strawberry birthmarks in infants

Strawberry birthmark is also termed as hemangioma. It is a type of vascular birthmark. In this the birthmark looks like a red colored swelling on the infant’s body. Even though, this birthmark might be there at the time o birth, it may come into notice only after a few weeks. The size increases till 8 months of age and the shape and color becomes like a strawberry. 

It is important to know about the types of strawberry birthmarks. It can be categorized as superficial hemangiomas and cavernous hemangiomas. Superficial hemangiomas are external in nature and are found on the skin of the infant whereas cavernous hemangiomas are internal in nature and are found in the internal organs. 

In most cases, strawberry birthmarks are common among female infants than in male infants. And it is also seen strawberry birthmarks are common in premature infants or infants with less weight. 

As far as treatment of strawberry birthmarks is concerned there are two views. Some doctors believe that there is no need of any treatment. And some doctors are of the view that this must be removed so that in future any complications do not arise. There are many kinds of treatments available like laser treatments, surgical removal and corticosteroids injections.
