Types of birthmarks

There are basically two categories of birth marks. One is vascular birthmarks and the other is pigmented birthmarks.

Vascular birthmarks: Tiny blood vessels are responsible for vascular birthmarks. They are mostly related to the vascular skin changes. They are fully matured at the time of birth itself. Strawberry birthmark is a popular example of vascular birthmarks. In case of strawberry birthmark, it is seen that the mark fades away on its own and there isn’t any need for treatment. In this category you may even find angel kisses and salmon patches. They are small pink mark normally on forehead and neck. However, they disappear on their own within a year. Port-wine stain is the most prominent form of vascular birthmarks. In certain cases these marks need cosmetic and medical treatment.

The pigmented birthmarks are normally tans, which are brown in color. Rather than blood vessels they are made out of pigmented cells. This is an important point of difference between vascular birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks. Moles fall in this category. Moles are harmless and normally do not need any treatment. Moles can be of different sizes and color. However, under extra ordinary circumstances where moles are required to be removed, surgical procedure or some such treatment has to be followed.
